Bulgarian Danail Mitev wielded his magic to hypnotise a flat and vulnerable Hamrun side, roundly thumped by superior opponents in their first defeat of the season .

The Mosta midfielder gave a tantalising glimpse of his qualities in the first half as he scored two goals and played an assist in the other to cut Mosta’s work early.

If nothing else, this second consecutive win should soothe any lingering nerves as Mosta climb up to fourth place in the League standings.

Mosta made only one change from the side that won against Sliema Wanderers, giving a start to Aboulezz instead of Ryan Grech.

Hamrun were bereft of the suspended keeper Andrea Cassar, the injured Gianluca Calabretta, with Bulgarian Vergilov sitting on the bench.

The Spartans ironically could have gone in front after only 22 seconds when Terence Vella broke through the Mosta defence, with his grounder clipping the foot of the post.

But then they faded out, looking completely out of sorts and woefully open as Mosta struck three times in the first half, with Danail Mitev stealing the headlines.

After eight minutes, keeper Curmi had to turn Bogdanovic’s free kick from the left into a corner. From the resultant Mitev corner kick, Carlos Campagnoli headed Mosta in front.

Mosta doubled their lead on 36 minutes. Danail Mitev curled an exquiste free kick at the top left hand corner from outside the Hamrun area.

Bogadanovic limped off with an ankle injury soon after.

Three minutes before the break, Mitev took the ball in his stride and burst past three opponents before cutting towards the left to beat keeper Curmi with a low drive.

Hamrun re-emerged in some better shape after the interval but lacked the bite to capitalise on their opponents’ laid back approach. Bozhov ran inside the Mosta area but was foiled by keeper Haber. The Mosta custodian rushed off his line to reach before substitute Spiteri on 55 minutes.

Towards the hour, Mitev started the move for Mosta’s fourth goal, playing the ball wide to Bajada whose cross was headed in by the towering Firas Aboulezz and make the points safe.

Hamrun kept trying. On 66 minutes Vella tested Haber with a powerful shot and on 71 minutes Vella crossed from the byeline on the left for Nikolay Bozhov to give the Spartans some scant consolation with a shot on the turn.

Obiefule, who was only a peripheral figure in Mosta’s attack yesterday, shot straight on the keeper when put clear by Zongo.

The match ended in a shooting practice for Mosta with Mitev and Bajada failing to find the target though as Hamrun kept chasing a lost cause.
