Dear Malta,

As a fellow island community, I know that you will be only too aware of the challenges isolated regions face in terms of energy security, fresh water scarcity and sea level rises. As another round of international climate talks produces little but inaction and disappointment, communities such as ours face a threat to our very existence.

The sad reality is that those with the smallest voice on the global stage are also the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change and dwindling resources. As islands, we urgently need to make the transition to renewable energy supplies, preserve our resources, make our economies sustainable and engage our communities.

We cannot stand idly by and wait for governments and world leaders to take the initiative; we need to take our destinies into our own hands. Next month my own island, the Isle of Wight, will be hosting the Ecoislands Global Summit 2012, a major new international event that will unite island and regional communities on a journey to sustainability.

As the founder of Ecoislands, I would like to personally extend the invitation to your community to join us at this turning point and work towards achieving renewable energy self-sufficiency by 2020 and sustainable by 2030. This summit is not about talk and targets, it’s about communities uniting on a meaningful journey to sustainability and accessing the resources and knowledge to turn that vision into reality.

Together we can take control of our own futures, working for a world in which every island and community lives within their means.
