Marsaxlokk 2
Marsaxlokk registered their second victory of the season beating lowly Birzebbuga with a goal in each half. The win lifted Marsaxlokk temporarily to the top of the table, whilst Birzebbuga are still in search of their first point after three matches.
Marsaxlokk deserved their victory, even though a two-goal defeat for Birzebbuga was a little too harsh on the side guided by Joe Gerada.
Birzebbuga were the better team in the first 45 minutes as they had more of the ball, but their attempts never really worried goalkeeper Omar Borg, who was called in action to save long range efforts.
In the dying minutes of the first half Marsaxlokk were menacing in front of goalkeeper Ivan Casha. On 43 minutes Douglas Da Silva Silveira had a good run on the left flank but his shot was brilliantly saved by Casha.
However a minute from the break Marsaxlokk forged ahead when a Silveira freekick was met by the towering Matthew Paul Clarke who headed past a helpless Casha.
The second half was less interesting with play mainly in midfield. Birzebbuga had more possession but Marsaxlokk were more dangerous in their breaks with Da Silva Silveira playing a blinder.
Birzebbuga pushed everything forward in the last minutes and went close on 90 minutes when Mead Mifsud’s header destined for the back of the net was brilliantly saved by Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Omar Borg.
In stoppage time Marsaxlokk sealed the issue with a second goal when Douglas Da Silva Silveira beat the offside trap, dribbled past goalkeeper Casha to plant the ball home.
