Perhaps the government call it reform, which has become a fashion nowadays, but a reform is something that it is reformed for the benefit for the people. In my opinion, this privatisation of car parks is nothing more than a financial benefit to whoever is awarded the contract.

Once again, Transport Malta has the honour of driving this last nail in the destruction of the Nationalist Party for many years to come. I am saying this not to please Dr Debono and his clan, because for me they are death forever. I have nothing against Dr Gatt, on the contrary, I have always said that Dr Gatt works very hard, and he is a doer, but I say “not at any cost” This time, Dr Gatt had said that this privatisation has been discussed and approved by the Cabinet. If that is true, where is the leadership of the Prime Minister to stop this suicide?

I do not understand the workings of governments, if they all work like this. Some days ago, it was announced in the newspapers that the government intends to privatise the car parks, then there was the tender procedure and then it went to Parliament for discussion. Is this democracy? If it is, it is on broken foot. Do those bright minds of the Cabinet not understand that this privatisation is going to boomerang against them, every time someone has to put his hand in his pocket? It’s useless for the Minister to try and sweeten this process where one of these companies are concerned, when I witnessed an individual at Mater Dei car park, who parked his car in a parking space reserved for the disabled in an empty car park on a holiday. His pickup was clamped and he was charged €35 to unclamp it. He had to borrow a few euros from third parties. Those are the regulations of these companies.

I am very glad that this tender process has been withdrawn, although I know it will be brought back after the election, possibly by different minster, and it will repeat itself: everybody has friends.
