Malta weightlifting has organised another successful competition with the participation of four clubs.

The competition was set in four different groups.

The male cadets category was won by Rylee Borg with 97 points followed by Bjorn Camilleri, 74 points and Blake Vassallo, 68 points. The female cadets was won by Beatrix Galea, 68 points and Francesca Mercieca, 56 points.

The second competition, male youths B section, was won by Miguel Grixti, with 133 points followed by Emersin Bugeja, 119, and Malcolm Camilleri, 118 points. Another two athletes that produced a great performance in this category were Owen Bugeja, 116 points and Kieran Mifsud, 112 points.

The third competition was for females’ youths. This was won by Nicole Gatt, 140 points. She also broke three national records in the 53kg category. Destiny Vella Busuttil confirmed 2nd place with 102 points followed by Nadine Gatt 93, points. The seniors’ female category was won by Jessica Ghigo, 140 points followed by Marilyn Grech, 107 points.

In the last competition, Hayden Farrugia won the youth A category with 183 points followed by Luka Grixti, 169 points and Joran Farrugia, 153 points.

Farrugia also managed to break three national records in the 94 kg category for youths.

The Men juniors category was won by Rodmar Pulis, with 272 points. He also closed the competition with 220kg total. The seniors section was won by Chris Schinas, 202 points followed by Charles Degiorgio, 195 points and Matthew Muscat Inglott was third on points, as he did not complete a total.

The MWA awards are now close, and the two athletes who are closest to winning the titles for progress are Malcolm Camilleri 66 points (for men) and Nadine Gatt 27 points (for women).

This competition, apart from ranking challenges, served also for selection of the national team to participate in the Mediterranean Cup next April in Italy.

In this competition, Stephen Borg, Rodienne Balzan, Gayle Caruana and Ramona Borg sat the practical examinations for international referee category two.

Other technical officials participating in this event were Alfred Ellul Mercer, Rita Caruana, David Saliba, Andrea Caruana together with the MWA president Jesmond Caruana.

Jesmond Caruana is participating in the World Youth Championships in Kosice, Slovakia, as technical official.
