Smartcity Malta was a hub of activity with over 100 athletes gathered for the start and finish of the first edition of SmartCity Malta 8 km road race organised by the St. Patrick’s A.C..
The race, which was flagged off by Suleiman Al Riyami, Country Director of SmartCity Malta, saw the athletes depart from the SmartCity Malta boulevard and proceeding to Bighi, Kalkara, Xghajra beach and back to SmartCity Malta.
The St Patrick’s A.C. thanked SmartCity Malta for their support and opening up the premises, which made the ideal setting for the start and finish of the race. Given the scenic route of this first SmartCity Malta 8 Km road race, all athletes enjoyed the race and are looking to be a part of an annual calendar of events at SmartCity Malta.
The winners of the race were Jonathan Balzan and Carmen Hili who finished the race in 26.44min and 30.30min respectively both of St. Patrick’s A.C. These were followed by Mario Grech and Andrew Grech in the male section and Joelle Cortis and Angele Sammut, both St. Patrick’s athletes, in the Female section. Trophies were presented by Suleiman Al Riyami, on behalf of SmartCity Malta. The first male and female also won a 2 night stay for 2 persons at the Hotel Ta' Cenc in Gozo. Trophies were also awarded to first male and female in each age category.
In the Junior Race a 1.5km loop in the SmartCity Malta premises was won by Luke Zammit and Laura Sammut.
Commemorative medals, a SmartCity Malta tee-shirt together with a pack sponsored by Nestle` Malta, Twistees and Raysun was given to each participant. Hilly and Ron Hill were also sponsors of the race.
