Lindsay Aquilina, an MCAST Institute of Art & Design student has been announced as the national phase 1 winner of the first Euro Design contest by NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto.

Her design was chosen out of the most voted top 10 designs from the participating 252 designs and she will now participate in the final phase of the competition by representing Malta in the European Championship with another 18 European countries.

Ms Aquilina is a second-year student of nineteen at MCAST studying Graphic Design to be awarded a High National Diploma. In her design, Lindsay Aquilina adorned the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto coffee machine, Melody with an organic pattern on a white background.

Lindsay’s inspirations mainly came from tribal symbols. Although the design is “tattoo-like” in black and white with a touch of colour, the design inspires a number of imagery such as Maltese lace, Maltese silver filigree, insects, flowers, tribal totems etc. The design is so elegantly detailed that one can see different images everytime, making the machine design surprisingly interesting on a daily basis.

On her part, Lindsay Aquilina expressed her gratitude and honour for the opportunity to represent Malta in a European design competition. “For me, it is a dream come true. I am on cloud nine since I did not expect it. I really hope that I will hold the Maltese flag up high in Milan”.

The Euro Design Contest is now in its final phase where the 19 countries are challenging each other with their local winning design on Facebook. Two winners will be announced on the much-awaited closing cermony in Milan on the 10th of November at 7pm. The first winner will be the machine with the most votes across Europe on Facebook. The second winner will be chosen by the jury. Both winning machines will be produced in limited edition in Spring 2013.

We ask everyone to support Malta by voting everyday for Lindsay’s design and to watch the closing cermony streamed live on facebook on the 10th of November at 7pm. Good Luck Lindsay! www.facebook.com/NESCAFÉDolceGustoMalta
