ASM Autocross race finals postponed

Malta Independent Saturday, 27 October 2012, 11:09 Last update: about 12 years ago

The ASM organised the 2nd Pasta Poiatti Autocross Championship event at the ASM Racing Circuits last Sunday. Three Quadbikers also demonstrated in this event.

On this day, the ASM received 32 registrations from established and new competitors in this sport. Christian Galea on his Ritmo and Matthew Borg on his Opel Nova won all the three qualifying heats thus securing their place on the Class ‘A’ list.

These were followed by Emm. Muscat on another Opel Corsa B together with Vince Farrugia on his VW Polo, Karmenu Mifsud on his IMP and Josef Grech on his Ford Fiesta.

Class ‘B’ finalists were Guzi Pace on his Ford Escort Mk1, Philip Joe Vella and Josef Abela on Opel Nova cars, Mario Scicluna on an Opel Corsa, Srephen Micallef on a Fiat Uno and Malcolm Borg on another Opel Corsa.

The finals started with Class B when Mario Scicluna managed to take the lead but unfortunately Abela overturned his Nova and the race was stopped by the Red Flag for safety reasons. All was set back to normal and the same race re-started obviously without Abela and Micallef who retired because of mechanical failures.

The race went well for another couple of laps with Pace in the lead and Scicluna very close behind at many times. In one of the chicanes designed to slow the cars, Scicluna was very close to Pace but accidentally hit a tyre and overturned his car.

At first he was in some shock so the medical team took over to assist Scicluna and though he seemed to have recovered in minutes, he was sent to hospital for further observations. Scicluna was released a couple of hours later and he drove safely back home.

The ASM committee decided to call it a day and suspended the final races for another date. In fact, these finals will be run again on Saturday 17 November at 4pm.

The Annual Car Demolition organised by ASM to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund is scheduled for 23 December at the ASM Racing circuits. Registrations for this Demolition will be accepted on 22 November and on 6 December. Registration takes place at the ASM Clubhouse at Mtarfa between 8pm and 9.30pm on both days as above.
