On several occasions in recent weeks I have been part of a reluctant convoy obliged to drive from Mellieha to the Xemxija end of the St Paul’s Bay by-pass at between 15 and 25 kph (10-15 mph) due to a truck with a very long trailer laden with two or three absolutely colossal boulders that are presumably bound for Valletta from Gozo.

Anything moving this slowly should be required to travel at night in order that such inconvenience and frustration is caused to the minimum number of other road users. There is nowhere on this stretch of road where overtaking is permitted (even on the arrow-straight part through Mistra Valley) and last week this short journey took me nearly 15 minutes. There were 12 vehicles between me and one of these behemoths (I had plenty of time to count them) and probably the same number, if not more, behind.

I am not sure which department/organisation is responsible for endeavouring maintaining a reasonable traffic flow on our intrinsically inadequate roads – probably Transport Malta – but whichever it is, could it please get involved and do something?
