Zminijietna – Voice of the Left considers the controversy that has arisen in the European Parliament with regards the nomination of minister Tonio Borg as European Commissioner for Health and Consumer affairs as one that could have been avoided easily.  Maltese government should have nominated a person with a more progressive ideological beliefs.

In the European Parliament, the European Green Party, the Left Block, the Liberal group and part of the socialists MEPs are totally against Tonio Borg's nomination. We appeal Maltese MEPs to follow suit.   

Minister Tonio Borg's political views were described in the international media as ultra conservative. Amongst the topics raised were his vote against the introduction of divorcedespite being upheld in a consultative referendum. As well, the stand taken in 2009 against the introduction of cohabiting couples (either heterosexual or homosexual) as beneficiaries of the rent reform legislation.

 Zminijietna endorse only those candidates who are progressive in their line of thought, respect the will of the people in a referenda, work for a social and ecological Europe, and are against a Europe of the elites, promote equality between sexes, civil rights and liberties, and take a clear stand against racial hatred and homophobia.
