Arrigo Sacchi visiting Malta

Malta Independent Thursday, 22 November 2012, 09:13 Last update: about 13 years ago

Former Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacci is visiting Malta next week. He will be accompanied by Maurizio Viscidi, vice co-ordinator of the Italian national youths team.

Sacchi had a brilliant coaching career, especially at AC Milan where he won the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup in 1988, the European Cup (now Champions League) in 1989 and 1990, the European Super Cup in 1989 and 1990 and the Inter Continental Cup, also in 1989 and 1990.

He was at the helm of AC Milan between 1987 and 1991, and later between 1996 and 1997. He was Italy national team coach between 1991 and 1996.

Other teams he had managed during his career were Parma and Atletico Madrid. In 2004-2005, he was Director of Football at Real Madrid.

Sacchi had been criticised on becoming a coach because he had never played football. But he had replied with what is now a famous quote: “I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first.”

During his stay in Malta, Sacchi is to meet the press next Tuesday at the Ta’ Qali Technical Centre. He will be met by the MFA Technical Director Robert Gatt who will also explain the reason for the visit of the two personalities.
