Chanel's Little Black Jacket

Malta Independent Monday, 26 November 2012, 07:22 Last update: about 11 years ago

The book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, released earlier this year, pays tribute to CHANEL’s little black jacket through over a hundred photographs. In this work the famous designer shows that this iconic twentieth-century garment is timelessly fashionable.

The book captures Chanel's little black jacket being adapted and worn differently by some of today’s greatest personalities in contemporary culture. Slipped on by the French singer Vanessa Paradis, transformed into a headdress for the American actress Sarah Jessica Parker, or adapted to Alice Dellal’s neo-punk look, this fashion masterpiece can adapt to any style.

Created during the fifties by Mademoiselle Chanel, the little jacket has been endlessly reinvented by Karl Lagerfeld in each of his collections ever since 1983, for the most part, in the fundamental Chanel colour: black. More than 50 years after it was first designed, this garment still occupies a unique place in the world of fashion: that of a luxury must-have item for every woman’s wardrobe. Whether in Tokyo, New York or Paris, the Chanel jacket looks just as good worn with a sophisticated attire as it does with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

It is this versatility that Karl Lagerfeld has chosen to capture in a series of photographs taken in close collaboration with Carine Roitfeld. The book accompanied an exhibition dedicated to it, which ran earlier this year in Tokyo, Japan.

The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL's classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld is published by Steidl, Göttingen. Chanel is distributed in Malta by Alfred Gera & Sons Ltd.
