It was a chilly Saturday morning of the first of December when a friend of mine decided to entertain an old dance aficionado’s weekend by inviting me to attend a locally produced contemporary dance show named ‘The Death of Snow White’ at the Aurora Theatre in Gozo. 

I must admit that I did not expect much but a few minutes into the show I was quickly changing my mind!  This was not the “…and they lived happily ever after…” fairy tale all of us are used to.  Instead it was a dark and dramatic story of mother vs. daughter reminiscent of the original story narrated by the Grimm brothers.

The choreography directed by Joelene Tabone presented a fluid and vigorous mix of contemporary dance and drama.  The young Snow White namely Marise Grech truly danced like a star, with the flowing and graceful technique of a veteran.  The Queen, Deborah Agius, was energetic and lively, and all other dancers played their role with precision and style. A thoroughly enjoyable show.
