I am certain that when Dr Lawrence Gonzi heard the news that Dr Joseph Muscat had asked his deputy leader Dr Anglu Farrugia to resign from his position as deputy leader, over comments Dr Farrugia passed about a member of the Judiciary, Dr Gonzi must have felt very embarrassed.

I say this because, as everyone knows, there have been numerous instances when Dr Gonzi should have done what Dr Muscat did and asked for the resignation of at least three of his ministers. But instead of asking them to resign, Dr Gonzi defended their mistaken acts of omission or commission.

Perhaps Dr Gonzi’s most glaring lack of leadership was seen in the way minister-of-failures, Dr Austin Gatt, was allowed to remain as a minister after all the fiascos associated with his ministry – ARMS, SmartCity, Enemalta, Arriva, you name it, which have also led to Dr Gonzi’s government losing the most important vote of all, the budget vote, which has led to the dissolution of Parliament!

This unexpected turn of events should convince any doubting Thomases that Dr Muscat’s leadership credentials are far superior to those of the current Prime Minister, because while Dr Muscat shows he is ready to take strong and difficult decisions, Dr Gonzi runs way from them.
