Spanish police have seized 11 metric tons of hashish smuggled from Morocco on trucks with tanks rigged to hide the drugs. Thirty five people were arrested in what was described as the breakup of a major smuggling ring that fed the European market.
Authorities displayed much of the haul on a patio outside the headquarters of the National Police on Wednesday. Some was packaged in small amounts resembling bars of soap, while much of it was held in suitcases made out of tape and packaging material.
Authorities said in a statement Thursday that the hashish was sent to a Madrid suburb for distribution to countries including Belgium, Britain, France and Holland.
Police also seized marijuana, €400,000 ($530,000) and 14 vehicles.
