Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has joined the coaching staff of German second-division team 1860 Munich, whose Jordanian investor hopes to gain quick promotion.
The decision to include Eriksson came before dawn in a meeting of Munich's management. Investor Hasan Ismaik has insisted on bringing in Eriksson despite strong initial objections from the management. Eriksson will sit on the bench alongside coach Alexander Schmidt, who replaced Reiner Maurer in November. The duties of both remain to be determined.
Eriksson's long career includes a five-year stint as England manager. The 64-year-old Swede has managed, among others, Fiorentina, Roma, Lazio, Benfica, Manchester City, Mexico and Ivory Coast.
1860 Munich is sixth in the second division, 17 points from first place.
