US Embassy speakers to discuss Lincoln

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 January 2013, 06:28 Last update: about 11 years ago

Euro Media Forum, in collaboration with Eden Cinemas and the US Embassy, is organizing a special screening of the film Lincoln.  This historical drama, directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln and covers the final four months of Lincoln's life.  Lincoln was nominated for Seven Golden Globe Awards and twelve Academy Awards.

Following the screening, Thomas M. Schmidt and Nathan Austin of the US Embassy in Malta will lead a discussion to provide insight into the highlights of the political career of the 16th U.S. President.

Schmidt and Austin will delve into the American and European socio-economic and political scenario during which Lincoln became President, including the social, economic and political background of the movement to abolish slavery, as well as the forces that drove the US into the Civil War - which has remained the most costly US military conflict ever in the price paid in American lives.

Questions from the audience will be welcome.

Lincoln's special screening will take place at Cinema 11 at Eden Cinemas on 1 February at 5.30pm, with the discussion being held after.
