Extensive restoration and conservation work in and around a large part of Fort St Angelo, once known as HMS St Angelo when it served as the Royal Navy Headquarters, are proceeding at full steam ahead, as can be seen from the photos supplied by Heritage Malta.

The project will ensure that Fort St Angelo is safeguarded and given a new lease of life.

The first phase of the project, which was approved by Mepa in April, included conservation work on the adaptive re-use of the middle level of the fort including certain historical features such as the barrack blocks and the cavalier.

Phase two will include the restoration and adaptive re-use of the lower level of the fort including the ramparts below the Cavalier, D'Homedes Bastion and the area around the passageway leading down to De Guiral Battery. Other interventions include the addition of sanitary facilities and the reinstatement of two traverse walls.

Phase three work will consolidate and conserve the outer fortifications, including the structures of the De Guiral Battery.

According to Heritage Malta, at the moment the main ramp is being restored while work on the de Guiral Sally Port is due to start soon to repair the damage caused by heavy vehicles some years ago before Heritage Malta was entrusted with parts of the fort.

The Fort is currently closed for restoration works, and the project is expected to be completed by 2015.
