Zminijietna – Voice of the Left insists that the EU Budget, even if reduced, must ensure the appropriate funding for programs to reduce violence against women and girls. 14th February 2013 marked the day when 1 billion people across the globe rose to protest against violence on women. 

On the other hand, Zminijietna welcomes MEPs’ call for a more incisive role of the EU in sharing best practices and law harmonisation amongst member states in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Sexual education is seen as a right in itself, enshrined in key human rights treaties ratified by all EU member states. Zminijietna believes that this should be given priority as it has proven to be an impressive deterrent against violence. This type of education should be given to all students starting from elementary schools. Young people need to have information channeled in a way which is adequate to their age including the internet and media.”

Many differences still exist in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights, though, among Southern and Northern countries and between Western and Eastern Europe as to the access to sexual education and reproductive health.   

Zminijietna notes that information on sexuality education should also be channeled to young women who have failed from the educational system, are living in the margin lines of poverty and who have no access to education. Those at risk may be single mothers, migrants, older women, LBT women, women with disabilities, women with drug addiction, and those involved in prostitution.

Politicians and policy makers are urged to address these vulnerable groups and formulate policies and promote laws and programs in advocating and channeling the best sexual education. This will guarantee to all women sexual and reproductive health during their whole life.
