The Water Services Corporation wishes to notify the public that it has been experiencing problems at its sewage treatment plants resulting in occasional slicks of partially-treated sewage in the sea off the coast of Xghajra, Ic-Cumnija at Mellieha and Ras il-Hobz in Gozo.

These technical difficulties are being caused by sporadic overloading arising from increased farm waste discharged into the public sewers. These discharges are causing both physical blockages and disruptions at the above plants, as well as exposing them to extraordinary pressures.

Water Services Corporation personnel are continuously monitoring the situation and carrying out the necessary interventions in order to remedy  matters where possible. The corporation also appeals to all industries in general, but in particular farmers, not to dump illegal waste into the public sewers.
