Ronnie O'Sullivan surged into a 7-1 lead after the first session of his World Championship quarter-final against Stuart Bingham at the Crucible.
The reigning champion, seeking a fifth world title, was in irrepressible form in the best-of-25 match and reeled off breaks of 79, 111, 87, 133 and 78.
O'Sullivan, 37, severely punished any mistakes and looked set to whitewash the world number eight.
However, Bingham got on the scoreboard by taking the session's final frame.
In the afternoon's other quarter-final, England's Ricky Walden leads Welshman Michael White 6-2.
White is appearing at his first World Championship and has already seen off two-time champion Mark Williams and eccentric Thai player Dechewat Poomjaeng.
But the 21-year-old, the youngest player left in the tournament, found it tough going against first-time Crucible quarter-finalist Walden and made a best break of only 40 whereas the Englishman finished the session in style with a run of 113.
Judd Trump came from 8-3 down against Shaun Murphy to level their World Championship quarter-final at 8-8 after Tuesday's opening two sessions.
The 23-year-old from Bristol, who won the UK Championship in 2011, took the final five frames of the day.
Trump's fightback included breaks of 118 and 93 as he took the momentum back from 2005 World Champion Murphy in the best-of-25-frame match.
On the other table, Kent's Barry Hawkins leads China's Ding Junhui 9-7.
Essex-born Murphy started the evening's play 6-2 to the good, and took the first frame to extend his lead before Trump hit back with a 108-0 scoreline in the 10th.
Murphy took the next but Trump's run of five unanswered frames left both men needing five more for a place in the Crucible semi-finals.
The match on the other side of the divide remains in the balance. Hawkins led 7-3 and 8-4 but Junhui's run of 72 in the final frame means the twice UK Champion faces only a two-frame deficit when play resumes on Wednesday.
