Tottenham winger Andros Townsend was charged by the English Football Association on Friday with misconduct over breaches of its betting regulations.

Townsend has until Monday to respond to the charge, but he has already withdrawn from England's squad for the under-21s European Championship next month in Israel.

The FA said in a statement that Townsend had been charged with breaches "in relation to a number of betting offenses." There is no suggestion the charge relates to match-fixing.

It is against FA regulations for players to bet on matches in competitions they are involved in or have any influence over.

On May 13, a message appeared on Townsend's official Twitter account saying "Might put a bet on a london club winning the championship playoffs! Have just got a feeling....."

Such a bet would not be a breach of the FA betting rules.

Townsend spent the second half of last season on loan at Tottenham's Premier League rival Queens Park Rangers, which was relegated to the second tier.
