Giving the gift of life

Malta Independent Tuesday, 28 May 2013, 19:34 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) has recently organised a blood–donation drive with its employees and neighbouring entities; namely The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE) and The Foundation for Information Technology Accessibility (FITA).

Blood-donation drives are organised on a regular basis at MITA but in light of the upcoming World Blood Donor Day on June 14, the Agency hopes that its initiative helps to further increase and spread awareness about the significance of blood donation and encourage other organisations to follow suit.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day and this year’s campaign, called "Give the gift of life: donate blood", will focus on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.

MITA’s blood-donation drive started in the second week of May and in a span of 10 working days managed to attract some 45 donors. To make things smoother, MITA organised its own shuttle between its offices and the National Blood Transfusion Unit in Guardamangia.

This initiative was coordinated by MITA’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. Noel Tabone, chairperson of the CSR committee said, “it was a success and the willingness of employees to contribute towards saving lives was inspiring. Giving blood takes very little time and effort, yet it can save a person’s life.”

Tony Sultana, MITA’s Executive Chairman, voiced his appreciation to the newly formed CSR Committee as well as to all participating employees, not only for donating blood but also for their dedication. “Such a campaign has highlighted the altruism of employees and demonstrated the dedication they possess to help others. MITA strives to encourage its employees to continually contribute towards society in any way possible. The Blood Drive campaign is a clear example of how we can help society and change a life in the process.”

The National Blood Transfusion Centre situated in St. Luke's Square, Guardamangia is open daily from 8.00a.m. till 6.00p.m., including Sundays and Public holidays.
