Malta Independent Tuesday, 28 May 2013, 09:39 Last update: about 11 years ago

The MCAST Agribusiness Open Weekend is back next weekend with many entertaining activities for all the family and its pets – free hands-on training in pet care, pet grooming, Maltese food, plant sales and wine and olive oil tasting to name a few.

This year’s edition of this popular event will be held between 31 May and 2 June 2013, at the MCAST Agribusiness Institute, in Qormi. The Institute’s students and staff organise the Open Weekend to invite the public to discover different aspects related to agriculture and animal care whilst participating in enjoyable activities. The event also introduces visitors, particularly young and adult prospective students, to the educational and career opportunities that the Institute offers.

The three-day event is open to everyone free of charge. Visitors will be able to try out different gardening and farming skills, learn how to take better care of their pets, take tours of the Institute’s animal husbandry units and fields, taste different dishes including Maltese food, experience the new agriculture multi-sensory area, participate in olive oil and wine tasting sessions, learn about different herbs, buy plants and food products produced by the Institute and observe various fish and exotic animals in aquaria and vivaria. The event will also include animal shows, as well as displays related to beekeeping, rabbit and poultry keeping, floriculture and veterinary services. Several NGOs, including the Slow Food Movement and Food Revolution Malta, the local representative of the latest campaign by renowned international chef Jamie Oliver, will be hosting activities during the Open Weekend as well. MCAST career advisors will be available to meet prospective students and provide information about MCAST’s full-time and part-time courses in agribusiness and other sectors.

Opening times are on Friday between 10:00 and 14:00, on Saturday between 10:00 and 20:00, and on Sunday between 09:00 and 18:30.
