Former campaigner for Malta’s entry into the European Union, Stefano Mallia, came out with a preposterous suggestion in his article entitled “EU exit in the Constitution” (ToM, 21 May). He suggested the inclusion of a clause in Malta’s Constitution, making the possibility of Malta’s withdrawal from EU subject to a two-thirds majority in Parliament,

What Mr Mallia is suggesting is that the will of the Maltese people should be completely ignored if, at any time in the future, an absolute majority of the Maltese people – even, say, a 90 per cent majority – may wish to enter into a different kind of relationship with the EU due to future developments which may go against the vital interests of our country, such as new EU intrusion in Malta’s financial services and online gaming sectors. Or, as seems probable, on the retirement age, etc.

We all know that the EU today is unrecognisable from the EU of 20 years ago, let alone when it was first set up in 1957! Can Mr Mallia say what the EU will be like in 10, 15, 30 years’ time? Why should today’s politicians bend the will of not just the present generations, but also future generations and future governments?

May I remind Mr Mallia that Malta’s membership of the EU came about after the Maltese had voted ‘Yes’ in a referendum. I will not go into the reasons how that ‘Yes’ vote was obtained. We all know how!

Why should the Maltese people now be denied the chance to reconsider that initial decision, if, as it seems very probable, that EU membership conditions may continue to bb changed drastically in the future?

The scaremongering tactic used with such devastating effect during the EU membership campaign was also used by Mr Mallia in his article. This is a favourite weapon used by europhiles throughout Europe. They will probably increase the dose when the next step – the creation of a EU Federal State– starts being discussed and debated! Jose Barroso has already fired the initial shots.
