I refer to the feature ‘Joseph Calleia – Malta’s Hollywood Actor (1897-1975)’, which I read with interest for two reasons (TMIS, 19 May).

First and foremost I regret not having made my acquaintance with this important person before his demise, when I was still in my 20s. I only had the opportunity to see this silver screen idol at a local cinema when he starred The Alamo and the article succeeded in rekindling my memories of those times,

The second reason is even more worth mentioning. The author, Anthony Zarb Dimech, goes to great lengths to provide a whole perspective of a life lived and experienced on the crest of a wave, a wave that never subsided during the actor’s life.

The article has all the information one needs to become more familiar with Joseph Calleia, and instils in the reader an ardent desire to discover more about him and his life.

I for one was instinctively taken aback at the erroneous spelling of the surname ‘Calleia’, but my suspicions were soon put to rest as the feature elaborated on why he changed the spelling of his surname.

Also, I cannot resist expressing my appreciation to the team of collaborators who, despite all the challenges of normal life, still found the dedication to spare some of their valuable time to research and create awareness in remembrance of Joseph Calleia the singer, composer, screenwriter and actor.

Last but not least, I humbly suggest that all this research into Calleia’s life be published in a book, so that it is placed on the historical record for posterity.

A huge well done to everyone, especially to Mr Zarb Dimech, for raising awareness on such an admirable project.
