The European Commission insists that its position with regards to former commissioner John Dalli is unchanged.
This declaration comes in the light of the Maltese police commissioner’s declaration that there is no evidence on which to arraign Dr Dalli.
The Commission stuck doggedly to the line that Dr Dalli’s position was “politically untenable,” with a delineation being made between the political and legal aspects of Dr Dalli’s resignation.
This is the exact same position taken by the Commissioner when the OLAF report was first leaked by the Maltese press.
A commission spokesperson claimed that Dr Dalli’s resignation was in no way linked to whether or not judicial proceedings were being taken against him, but on the fact that he was under investigation by the EU’ anti-fraud agency, OLAF.
The spokesperson insisted that Dr Dalli had resigned from his position at his own free will, in the presence of commission president Manuel Barroso and another witness.
