Magħtab project four years in the offing - PN; Government reacts

Malta Independent Wednesday, 12 June 2013, 15:54 Last update: about 12 years ago

In a statement issued in response to environment minister Leo Brincat’s claim about the recycling plant at Maghtab, the PN said that the government has ample time to get the project off the ground.

“The minister is wrong in giving the impression that a project co-financed by the EU with an investment of 50 million is a simple matter. The minister was reported to have said that if the project does not start by October, the allocated funds will be lost,” the statement said.

According to the same statement, the PN said that is cannot understand how a project that has been under discussion with the European Commission for four year, cannot start earlier than October.

It also said that the minister should have told residents in the Maghtab area that with the proposed plant, the resident’s  quality of life will be improved.

Finally, the minister should recognise that without the proposed plant, the country will need another engineered landfill in the space of three years, the statement said.

“We cannot understand how the minister is ready to go through the hassle of finding a site for a landfill, instead of getting the Maghtab project off the ground.”

Government statement

The government has denied that the Maghtab recycling plant project is on hold.

In a statement issued today, the government said that WasteServ was always slow to submit the relevant information required by the EU, or at time even submitted incomplete figures.

“The government is committed to implementing the project, as well as ensuring that the technical deficiencies present at the Sant Antnin plant are not repeated,” the statement said.
