The NGO which promotes prisoners’ welfare, Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl, said yesterday substantial reductions have been introduced to items which prisoners have to buy from the jail’s shop, which many refer to as the Tuck Shop.
It said it had for years been complaining about the exaggerated prices charged and as an example said that a bottle of water which used to be sold to prisoners for 51c is now selling for 35c. Price cuts to many other objects vary from 2c to 90c.
Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl said it had presented a memorandum to the political parties before the election, referring to the tuck shop prices. It added that this and other initiatives being taken at the Kordin jail “augur well” for the changes that are needed.
