Yesterday afternoon, the Mayor, Mr. Anthony Chircop and Vice Mayor, Dr. Kris Busietta had a very cordial and positive meeting with the Hon. Dr. Jose Herrera where the issue of the Suspension of the Controlled Timed Parking Scheme was discussed.

The report, which the Tas-Sliema Local Council had submitted to Hon. Dr. Herrera and the Hon. Minister Mizzi, on a holistic traffic management for Tas-Sliema, was also discussed and explained in further detail.

The report details initiatives for the segmenting of the Sliema locality into zones (Commercial, Residential and School Zones), where various traffic related issues shall be catered for according to the exigencies of the different zones. These traffic issues include, and are not limited to, speed management, parking maximization, internal public transport and the controlled timed parking scheme.

The Tas-Sliema Local Council reiterated its position that the introduction of the controlled timed parking scheme is totally legal since this was being implemented according to LN 200 of 2009, and therefore the decision to suspend its introduction is ultra vires.

The Sliema Local Council explained that it remains committed to introducing the controlled timed parking scheme in the locality and remains open for suggestions to the betterment of the system.
