Contrary to what was stated in The Malta Independent on Thursday editorial, dated 20th June and entitled ‘Transparency: Power station due process” the Ministry for Energy and Conservation of Water would like to point out that it was never and it is not the government’s intention to circumvent any legal or proper channels in delivering the new energy project. Our overriding aim is to provide the Maltese families with a project that is feasible, safe and environment friendly.

We are fully aware that this is a national project which is of strategic importance. That’s why we can assure you and your readers that all the proper checks and balances will be carried out, all the normal procedures will be followed and all the required studies will be done. Since we totally believe in this project we are making sure that this national project is going through the normal planning process.

Well before the Opposition called for any studies on the project, the Ministry for Energy and Water Conservation started carrying out a number of studies as explained in a Press Release issued by this Ministry on Tuesday 18th June. These surveys include among others, a full environmental impact assessment including offshore and onshore geotechnical surveys, marine ecology surveys, air dispersion modelling, visual impact studies, risk assessments, health impact assessments and also noise analysis.

Whilst we are fully committed to keep on track and complete this project on time, we are also fully committed to offer to our families the best option which will follow all the required laws, rules, regulations and procedures to provide them with lower electricity tariffs and cleaner energy.
