Manchester United have had a £12m bid to reunite new manager David Moyes with England defender Leighton Baines rejected by Everton, the BBC reports.
Moyes has made Baines, 28, one of his top transfer priorities as he prepares to take charge officially at United.
He is almost certain to return with an improved offer to persuade Everton to part with one of their prize assets.
However, Everton's stance on Baines has been a firm "not for sale".
New Toffees manager Roberto Martinez made it clear he would like the left-back to sign a new contract.
Newly promoted Premier League outfit Crystal Palace have agreed a fee to sign Peterborough striker Dwight Gayle, Talksport reports.
The highly-rated 22-year-old impressed for the Posh during a loan spell from Dagenham & Redbridge last season and completed a permanent move to London Road in January.
The forward went on to play a vital part in the team’s bid to escape Championship relegation, scoring 13 goals in 29 appearances including an outstanding hat-trick against Blackburn, though Posh eventually ended the season relegated by just a single point.
Gayle has attracted interest from a host of Championship and Premier League sides following his impressive goal-return, but it seems the Eagles have pipped them to the post to sign the London-born starlet, who was seen at the club’s Beckenham training ground on Thursday.
