Malta Independent Saturday, 29 June 2013, 20:43 Last update: about 11 years ago

Heritage Malta has just launched its latest publication: The Inquisitor’s Palace: an architectural gem spanning centuries and style.

The book is a collection of papers by curators and prefaced by History of Art Professor Mario Buhagiar. The papers included in the publication synthesise the latest discoveries concerning this most intriguing of Maltese palaces.

Edited by Kenneth Cassar who is also one of the contributors, this full-colour publication includes a paper by Godwin Vella who surveys the recent restoration works and sheds new light on the relevance of the building in the time when it was still a Hospitaller Castellania prior to the advent of the first Inquisitor in 1574. Kenneth Gambin explores the architectural transformation of the building into a palazzo romano with its public and private spaces. Mr Cassar delves into the architects and artists commissioned to embellish the edifice and places the palace within an art and historical context, while Matthew Balzan reviews the historic development of the prison complex within the same building.

The publication is a well-informed study, documenting the recent discoveries from research and ongoing restoration at the Inquisitor’s Palace and serves as an eye-opener to the unique importance of this prime historic monument.

The book, which is priced at €10, can also be purchased online from the official Heritage Malta website.
