The news that Gozo is likely to hold a referendum to decide on the choice of a permanent link with Malta either by a bridge or tunnel will surely rekindle heated discussions expressing varied views of the pros and cons of the alternatives.

Unfortunately, a common negative denominator is that both alternatives proposed are defective and destructive in the sense that they are liable to cause dramatic changes to the Gozitan landscape and environment. This will be the result of easier access by traffic on roads and streets that were never designed or intended for large traffic volumes. Heavy increase in noisy motor/cycle traffic would inevitably follow irrespective of whatever type of connection is adopted.

Gozitans renowned for their rational thinking and common sense would be expected to decide wisely whether to forsake and exchange the peacefulness and tranquillity of their island home for a noisy vehicular connection running both ways.

The link would in the end surely alter, degrade and cripple a charming island by being physically joined with the excessively trafficked and noisy sister island.

If at the end of the day Gozitans decide to hold a referendum on choice, it is particularly imperative and vitally important for them to keep in view the lesser of the two evils they shall inevitably have to face in the future.

The abominable concept of a bridge link would, in addition, have a frightful and devastating impact on the canal due to its size and monstrous appearance, no matter how well and skilfully designed it is. It will compete with and permanently cripple the magnificent sea panoramas Gozo should be proud to offer in their current present pristine state and beauty.

Voters should also remember that this is a once-in-a-lifetime decision that can never be rectified or the area returned to its former state by any divorce or separation procedures on grounds of incompatibility or distress.
