Newcastle United look set to pull out of the race to sign Wigan Athletic striker Arouna Kone, Newcastle Chronicle reports.

Wigan had given United permission to speak to the Ivory Coast star.

The 29-year-old has a £5million release clause in his current deal with the Latics.And although Everton is thought to be his preferred destination, United were believed to be interested in the Ivory Coast international.

Kone does not fit into United's blueprint and any move for the man who grabbed 13 goals last season would see a major U-turn in the club's policy.

Now Wigan sources have suggested United have ended their interest in the striker.
