An open letter to Lawrence Gonzi

Malta Independent Sunday, 14 July 2013, 09:06 Last update: about 13 years ago

I followed with great interest your impassioned statement in Parliament yesterday on the legal and human aspects of recent events involving people trying to seek a better and safe life for themselves and their children.

Your intervention proves not only the experience and success that you amply demonstrated in your years as Prime Minister, but also your ability to view matters holistically, never ignoring the human dimension at the heart of all policy making. Your presence as a Member of Parliament enriches the chamber you sit in. You bring to the House of Representatives a wealth of experience and perspective, the loss of which is not easily affordable to the Maltese people in general, nor to the whole democratic process so much to our heart.

There are strong indications that it has been your intention thus far to relinquish your seat in Parliament. It is my personal appeal to you, also in the best interests of our country and our people, that you reconsider this decision. You have always demonstrated beyond any doubt how the real national interest is very close to your heart, and I sincerely hope that you take this appeal in that spirit.

I shall be making this letter public, as I am sure that I am not alone in having this sentiment.

Dr Victor G. Scerri
