Arsenal are set to turn their full attention to signing Luis Suarez after Napoli confirmed the transfer of Gunners target Gonzalo Higuain, Metro reports.
Higuain joins the Serie A side from Real Madrid for a fee thought to be just over £30m.
A statement on the Italian club’s website said: ‘Napoli have made the signing of Gonzalo Higuain official. The Argentinian striker arrives from Real Madrid.’
The Gunners were still thought to be in the race for the 25-year-old up until last week.
But the transfer has now been finalised and Napoli boss Rafael Benitez says Higuain will be a huge hit in Serie A.
‘We were looking for a quality player. We were looking for someone playing at the highest level,’ he said.
‘We have signed a player who comes from Real Madrid and we have signed a striker who has scored a hatful of goals and who will adapt very well to our system — an attacking system. We needed a player like this.’
While the confirmation of the deal will come as a blow to boss Arsene Wenger, who is desperate to bring a new striker to the club before the start of the coming season, it will allow the Arsenal hierarchy to focus fully on their attempts to lure Suarez to north London.
