Neptunes and San Giljan meet in top clash

Malta Independent Friday, 2 August 2013, 11:30 Last update: about 11 years ago

Premier League leaders Neptunes Emirates play their main challengers San Giljan Sir?Alex in the direct clash between the top two teams on Saturday, in what can be described as the match of the weekend (7.15pm).

The outcome, although not decisive, may have a huge bearing on this season’s honours, with Neptunes enjoying a three-point lead over San?Giljan in the standings.

For San Giljan, who beat Exiles Ferretti last Friday to keep within touching distance, this might be their last chance to challenge for the title and a win for the Saints will throw the title race wide open. A win for the champions though, who have maximum poinst so far from seven outings, will put them well in the driving seat and a step closer to retaining the title.

Although they will be out of action this weekend, Sliema Frank?Salt Real Estate may still have a say in this season’s honours.?They have still to play the two teams above them, matches scheduled for next Wednesday against San Giljan and then  on Saturday 10 August against Neptunes.

Meanwhile, Exiles Ferretti and Sirens Ritter Sports meet this evening (7.15pm) in a battle of the basement. Sirens’ only win so far has been against Exiles, who are still winless and pointless at the bottom of the standings.

In Division 1, Valletta United may give their championship and promotion hopes a big boost if they beat third place Ta’ Xbiex Amigos tomorrow (6pm).

Valletta are three points above Marsaxlokk  ASC and have a game in hand after Marsaxlokk succumbed to a disappointing defeat against?Ta’ Xbiex last Friday. A Valletta win, against a much improved Ta’ Xbiex, will definitely keep them on top, ahead of the direct clash with Marsaxlokk next Tuesday.

Marsaxlokk can keep their hopes alive by beating Otters Nivea in today’s other match in the weekend programme (6pm).
