Four traffic fatalities in Q2

There were four traf?c fatalities in the second quarter this year.

In the second quarter, reported traf?c accidents reached 3,746, almost at par with the corresponding quarter last year. The largest increase was registered in the Northern Harbour district (5.3%). On the other hand, the Gozo and Comino district registered the largest decrease (27.3%) in traf?c accidents. 

In the period under review, 436 traf?c casualties were reported, of which 273 involved drivers. Among this group there were 224 injuries which were slight and 46 were reported as grievous. Furthermore, the injuries sustained by three male drivers proved fatal. During the period under review, 31 other persons (12 passengers and 19 pedestrians) suffered grievous injuries, while 131 (87 passengers and 44 pedestrians) were slightly injured.  Moreover, injuries sustained by a male passenger proved fatal.

On a gender basis, slightly-injured persons in the second quarter numbered 355: 213 males and 142 females. Grievously-injured persons totalled 77, the majority being males. The majority of casualties were in the 25-39 age group.

Table 8 shows that 68.8% of traf?c casualties were caused by passenger cars, followed by motorcycles, at 19.5%, while 5.5% were caused by goods- carrying vehicles.

In the second quarter, the highest traf?c casualty rate occurred on Saturdays, accounting for 16.3% of total casualties. The highest number of accidents was recorded on Fridays, totalling 622 cases, and the lowest on Sundays, with 356 cases. Sundays topped the highest casualty-to-accidents ratio. 

Table 10 shows that the daily time bracket in which most accidents occur is between 15:00 and 17:59, with 783 cases, or 20.9% of the total. This is followed by the 12:00-14:59 time bracket, with 767 cases. The least number of accidents occurring daily took place between 03:00 and 05:59 (87 cases).

In the period under review, Hal Qormi registered the highest rate of traf?c accidents, with 232 cases. Marsa and Birkirkara were next, with 215 and 205 reported accidents respectively.
