Everton boss Roberto Martinez is claiming victory in his tug-of-war with Manchester United over Leighton Baines, the Mirror reports.

But Everton prepared to do business with their former boss David Moyes over Marouane Fellaini.

The Old Trafford giants had a £12million bid for Baines rejected more than six weeks ago and Martinez says that appears to have been their final offer for the 28-year-old.

The Goodison club have always maintained they do not want to sell Baines and it is understood they have told their England left back he will not be leaving.

Blues boss Martinez, who succeeded Moyes in June, said: “Before we went to Austria [for pre-season training], one club officially contacted ourselves with an offer and it was a final offer.

“They put something over and the valuation wasn’t anywhere near the quality of Leighton Baines.

“That was the end of it, but since then there’s been all the speculation, which has been part of what the transfer window is.

“There’s never been another club or anyone else putting in an offer for Leighton. Since then we’ve moved on and we’re continuing to focus on the start of the season.”

While Everton are determined to hang on to Baines, they would be willing to cash in on Fellaini and hand the proceeds from his sale to Martinez.
