After a lack of response from Maltese parliamentarians regarding the possible legalization of naturist beaches and topless bathing areas in Malta, the group promoting nudist beaches is prepared to take the matter to European liberal parliamentarians and organizations.
Our group is strictly a non-political group and deplore that our statements are sometimes politicized by some members of the media, the group said in a statement.
So far and after many years of inaction the former PN government had hinted to decriminalize naturist swimming. Police action against naturists at unofficial nudist beaches is continuing, including at remote areas of Ghajn Tuffieha and Gnejna beaches.
We have had support from some members of parliament (largely from the PL side) however this was on a private basis. If this inaction continues then we will ask the help of European parliamentarians and organizations as well as international civil liberties groups to put pressure on the Maltese government, the group said.
The group has sent an email message Helena Dalli, as Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties, on the issue, however we do not expect an adequate response even though ‘rights for minorities’ was part of the election campaign for the PL.
