All attention of waterpolo enthusiasts will be on tomorrow’s top clash between leaders San Giljan Sir Alex and second place Neptunes Emirates as the BoV Premier League draws to an exciting end.
It might not be the way many might have predicted this season would turn out, but San Giljan have proved worthy of taking the role of main protagonists in this campaign and they need only avoid defeat against their nearest challengers to be crowned new champions.
They lead the standings with 27 points, three more than Neptunes with a match to go. San Giljan have performed against all expectations this season, and with Sliema Frank Salt Real Estate unable to keep up the pace, San Giljan look well equipped to make the breakthrough.
San Giljan have only lost one match this season, exactly against Neptunes (9-19) way back in June.
In the second round they beat Neptunes with a close win 14-13 as they dominated their opponents in the third and decisive session that went 5-1 for them.
Besides losing to San Giljan, Neptunes also suffered a damaging defeat against Sliema (8-9) in the second round, to lose the primacy.
With San Giljan showing more consistency as the campaign progressed, Neptunes could only trail their opponents for the third round.
Losing also to Sliema in the Knock out final, this is the last chance for Neptunes to keep their hopes of winning some silverware alive.
They have to beat San Giljan tomorrow to force a decider. Many still think Neptunes are the strongest side around. The Reds have an experienced squad, made up of talented locals such as Nicky Lanzon, Steve Camilleri and Michele Stellini, joined by foreigners Aleksandar Ciric from Serbia and Hungarian Tamas Molnar. They might be capable to rise to the occasion and prolong a decision about the title win.
With nothing tangible to play for, bottom placed Exiles Ferretti will be hoping they might register their first win of the season against the team above them in the table, Sirens Ritter Sports, this evening (7.15pm).
