Karl Galea suspended for championship decider

Neptunes and San Giljan will be meeting once again this evening in the decider which will determine this year’s Bank of Valletta national champions.

San Giljan centre Karl Galea has been suspended by the ASA's disciplinary committee following incidents that occurred after Saturday's match. Neptunes foreigner Alexander Ciric, who crossed over to the San Giljan end during the game, escaped with a simple fine.

Both teams finished their league commitments on 30 points after Neptunes won the final clash between the two teams last Saturday 9-8.

That was a very close encounter in which San Giljan fought hard to score an equaliser near the end which would have given them the title. In fact, Neptunes just managed to hold on to their slender lead till the end to force today’s decider.

In such matches, one cannot say there are any favourites. Both have shown consistency this season although at a certain time, Neptunes seemed to be lowering their colours, even losing to Sliema in the KO final.

These Balluta Bay rivals will certainly provide local followers with a spectacle and another big crowd, perhaps even bigger than that which attended last Saturday’s clash, will be at the Tal-Qroqq Pool this evening.

The match today starts at 6.30pm. It will be played to a finish, that is, extra time as per FINA rules will be played if necessary, and, if a result has not been reached at the end of extra time, then a penalty shoot-out, also as per FINA rules, will determine the result.

San Giljan will wear white caps and will use the benches on the “table” side of the pool. San Giljan supporters will use the stands on the “table” side of the pool.

Neptunes will wear blue caps, use the benches on the “away” side of the pool and Neptunes supporters will use the “away” stands.
