Mexico may return to F1 calendar after 22 years

Malta Independent Thursday, 5 September 2013, 20:35 Last update: about 11 years ago

Mexico could hold its first Formula One race in 22 years in 2014 if a provisional schedule is approved by the World Motor Sport Council.

A draft calendar reported by the British Press Association on Thursday features an unprecedented 21 races. The previous high was 20, while there are 19 this year.

Mexico has been pencilled in for Nov. 9 — a week before the United States Grand Prix — but its status is dependent on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez being made race-ready.

There is set to be a new grand prix in Sochi, the Russian city hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, on Oct. 19 and that too is subject to approval by F1's governing body.

New Jersey will not host a race despite the backing of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Traditional opener Australia will again kick off the season with Bahrain's bid to open the championship appearing to have failed. The campaign will start on March 19 and again end in Brazil on Nov. 30.

The World Motor Sport Council meets on Sep. 27 in Dubrovnik.
