Hibernians win Super Cup

Malta Independent Monday, 9 September 2013, 11:53 Last update: about 13 years ago

Hibernians won the Super Cup last week after beating Birkirkara 2-1 after extra time.

It was a penalty four minutes from the end of extra time that gave the Trophy to the Paolites.

The match was more or less balanced with Birkirkara showing superiority in the first half during which they took the lead with a goal from Rachel Cuschieri.

The Paolites dominated the second half and deservedly equalised in the 75th minute through Ylenia Carabott.

During extra time, both sides tried to get the winner but it was the Paolites who grabbed the opportunity when they were awarded a penalty four minutes from time after a handling infringement by Kirstie Vella in the Birkirkara area. Carabott scored from the spot kick to the delight of the Hibernians’ fans.

At the end of the match, MFA vice president Ludovico Micallef, together with the Grassroots, Youth Development and Education deputy general secretary Maria Mifsud, presented the Super Cup to Hibernians captain Dionne Tonna.
