In 1963, a polytechnic institute started teaching engineering to six students in Malta. Fifty years later over 100 students graduated from the Faculty of Engineering as it attracts millions of euros in funding (it still needs more, much more).
To celebrate, Think magazine and Ing. Emmanuel Francalanza created a 3D Bionic Human. It also looked into how we could clean up Malta and how transport could change by 2025.
The Bionic Human imagines how research being done locally can improve us. Better limbs, teeth, and freethinking robotic assistants await. Bionic Woman, Robocop, eat your heart out.
Malta has won an award. It’s the second highest generator of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU per capita. Local engineers could help us have greener skies, seas and homes. We just need to act.
A big source of pollution is traffic. By turbo-charging cars we could build smaller more efficient engines. By 2025 we could even have faster, lighter, and harder to sink ships and safer, cleaner planes. The future is bright.
From a darker angle, Will Love Tear Us Apart takes Joy Division’s song Love Will Tear Us Apart and turns it into a game with three amazing levels. This game sees you trying to save a relationship through anger, compassion and compromise.
Etna – this volcano needs no introduction. It has made Italy a fertile landscape but it is so fearsome that its ash plumes can affect Malta. A local team based in Gozo has studied and modeled its eruptions aiding Sicilian volcanologists to keep an eye out for our Island.
The magazine also talks to students looking up at the stars, studying diabetes or making 3D paintings. Alumni vary from mathematicians to professionals in the insurance sector, and from people working in the sciences to those dealing with patents. Think even mentions a new racing car being built in Malta by students.
