Agency workers in health sector

Malta Independent Thursday, 19 September 2013, 07:39 Last update: about 13 years ago

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left welcomes the agreement reached recently between the Maltese Union of Midwives and Nurses and the Government to employ all medical students who have just finished successfully their studies. MUMN has made this appeal in view of the shortage of staff in the health sector.

On the other hand,Zminijietna appeals to the Trade Unions to safeguard the employment conditions of foreign workers hired by private agencies, to ensure that these workers are not exploited. Recently the European Union had also issued a directive to protect the working conditions of these workers.

International research shows that agency workers are forced to work abnormal hours, experience lack of training, have no job security, low pay and worst of all, have to give a percentage of their earnings to private agencies.

Zminijietna insists that the employment of these temporary workers in the public health sector should be under the management and control of ETC. The idea of worker’s cooperative should also be promoted in this field.
