University Professor’s recent talks and publications

Professor Peter Mayo from the Department of Education Studies, University of Malta, returned from Poland where he delivered two talks. The first was the keynote address at the eighth Polish Education Congress hosted by the University of Gdansk.  The talk was titled Europe’s Lifelong Learning Policy Discourse: A Critical Analysis of Its Underlying Tenets and was delivered in the conference’s opening session, on 19 September, held at the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Centre in Gdansk. Around 600 people registered for the conference which is held once every three years.

On Saturday, 21 September, Professor Mayo delivered a talk at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, as guest of this ancient university’s Institute of Education. The title of Professor Mayo’s talk was Italian Signposts for a Sociologically and Critically Engaged Pedagogy. Don Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967) and the Schools of San Donato and Barbiana Revisited, which is also the title of a paper due to appear (currently at the production stage) in the British Journal of Sociology of Education.

During the talk Professor Mayo drew on insights from another published paper Lorenzo Milani in Our Times, which appears in Policy Futures in Education (Vol. 11, No. 5, 2013, pp. 516-523) and his jointly authored book with Federico Batini and Alessio Surian (professors at the universities of Perugia and Padova respectively), Lorenzo Milani, the School of Barbiana and the Struggle for Social Justice (New York: Peter Lang, 2013) – also currently in production.

Other very recent (2013) or forthcoming (2014) publications by Peter Mayo include his edited volume Learning with Adults. A Reader (Sense, 2013- in production) which serves as a companion volume to the co-authored book, with Professor Leona English, Learning with Adults. A Critical Pedagogical Introduction (Sense Publishers, 2012).

Recent publications include papers in the following journals: Critical Sociology, Capital & Class, Socialism and Democracy, Sociologisk Årbok (co-authored with Prof. Leona English), Word and Text. A Journal of Literary Studies and Linguistics (interviewed by Prof. Ivan Callus), Critica Marxista, Latino America e tutti i  sud del mondo, Revista Trabalho & Educação (co-authored with Prof. Leona English),  Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies, International Journal of Sociology of Education, Holy Land Studies (co-authored with Najwa Al-Silwadi), Rizoma-freireano and Civitas Educationis. They also include three entries in the just published Encyclopedia of Modern Political Thought, CQ Press (Sage) and a chapter in G. Zafiris and M. Gravani (eds.) Challenging the European Area of Lifelong Learning, Springer.
