US lawmakers reach deal – default avoided

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 October 2013, 10:11 Last update: about 14 years ago
US lawmakers yesterday finally managed to agree on a deal to increase the debt ceiling. They agreed on a bill which passed votes both in the Senate and the House of Representatives. President Obama then signed the legislation last night which ends the US government shutdown. The debt problem is not resolved with this of course, the eventual solution was just postponed for a few months. It will be again on the agenda early spring 2014 but a potential default of the US was avoided for now.
