'Citizenship scheme equivalent of Lidl discount store for passports’

Malta Independent Wednesday, 6 November 2013, 11:11 Last update: about 12 years ago

PN MP Clyde Puli today continued the PN’s assault on the government’s citizenship scheme, which will see passports being sold for €650,000.

Mr Puli said that the government is "prostituting" Malta in order to fund the budget. He called the scheme the equivalent of the minister setting up a “Lidl discount store” for passport sales.

He argued that the budget will see the government spending more than it makes, and the government had to “prostitute itself in order to fund its habits.”

“The government is in panic, you can’t only talk but you have to take decisions too, they talk big but they act small,” Mr Puli said.

He said that the government should publish the names of all those who are granted citizenship under the scheme, which he called the “niche of mediocrity.”

“It is an immoral law, for it distinguishes between the value of a person’s life, those who can pay for citizenship and those who cannot,” Mr Puli said.

Kristy Debono

PN MP Kristy Debono questioned why no mention of the scheme can be found in the Labour Party’s electoral manifesto.

"I’m sure Joseph Muscat would have found a few more papers in order to stick this proposal into the manifesto,” Ms Debono said.
